Legend "Golden Hill"
Legends Of Belarus
Golden Hill in Minsk – a place wrapped in legends, each reflecting a unique story.
According to one legend, the hill got its name because of the bright yellow leaves that covered its slopes in autumn, creating the impression of a golden covering.
Another legend speaks of robbers who hid in the forest on the hill. They robbed travelers and concealed their treasures in the thicket. It was believed that many treasures were hidden on the hill, which is why it was called «golden».
The most common version is associated with the Church of St. Roch. During the epidemics of the 17th century, the people of Minsk sought the saint”s protection. Legend has it that after one of the epidemics ended, a collection of donations was organized: the townspeople created a ”golden hill” of coins, which were later used to build the church, known as Zolotogorskaya.
