For the first time, European Parks Day was celebrated in Europe on May 24, 1999. The date is not accidental - May 24, 1909 the first national parks in Europe were organized in Sweden. Since then, protected natural areas have become an invaluable part of Europe's natural and cultural heritage.
Today, there are practically no large forested areas left in Europe, so European Parks Day is more relevant than ever to attract public attention to the problem of preserving protected areas.
