Park, garden square

Park is a protected area, in its natural or semi-natural state, or planted, and set aside for human recreation and enjoyment, or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. It may consist of rocks, soil, water, flora and fauna and grass areas. Many parks are legally protected by law.
In Belarus first parks appeared in palaces and country manors forming unique manor-park and palace-park ensembles. Traditionally have been formed two types of park:

  • Regular park appeared in France in the Baroque period and was based on the parallelism and symmetry.
  • Landscape park (English Park) became popular in the XVIII century and it stuck to naturalness and natural composition.
Public city parks appeared in Europe only at the beginning of the XIX century and today they are an integral part of every city.

Garden square is an open space with buildings surrounding a garden, often located in urban areas of a city. Usually its area is about 0,15-2 ha and it includes park paths, playgrounds, lawns, flower gardens, separate groups of trees and bushes.
