Legend "Stolbtsy"

There are several versions of the origin of the city of Stolbtsy, according to one of them, on the site of modern Stolbtsy, borders of possessions of three princes once converged. Pillars were dug into the ground, which were called stolbtsy. At this place people settled and found this poles buried in the ground. So they began to call this place.

The second legend says that at the place where Stolbtsy are now, there was once a forest. In this forest, a knyaz built a monastery, and for a long time monks lived there. In one year, they all died from the plague. The monastery became empty. People decided that this is God”s punishment. The monastery collapsed. And at that place they buried three columns as a sign that it was impossible to settle here. But as time passed, and on the orders of the prince people began to settle here. They found buried posts and called this settlement Stolbtsy.
