History
The first mention of a shrine on this site dates back to 1697, when a wooden chapel was built here under the patronage of the Zasvir Monastery. In 1810, a new wooden church was erected on its foundation, which soon became a significant spiritual center. However, in the mid-19th century, the temple was closed. A new chapter in its history began in 1902 thanks to the efforts of landowner Kazimir Skirmunt, who not only restored the building but also significantly expanded it. Two years later, the church was solemnly consecrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Remarkably, after World War II, the church remained active thanks to the dedication of local residents and the help of a Soviet pilot whose life they had saved.
Architecture
The Church of the Virgin Mary in Shemetovo is an example of ecclesiastical architecture with elements of classicism. The building is cruciform in shape, stands on a solid base, and is covered with a gable roof. The exterior is accentuated by Doric columns, triangular pediments, large stained-glass windows, and expressive pilasters. The spacious entrance is adorned with massive stone steps. The interior impresses with its artistic frescoes, rich ornamentation, and a magnificent altar decorated with carvings. A special highlight is the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, delivered from Rome by special order of Skirmunt. Next to the church stands a preserved early 20th-century wooden bell tower — two-tiered, with a tented roof and a metal cross.
