Description

On 22nd June, 1941 the Frontier post of lieutenant Victor Usov took his first and last fight. There was an explosion in the night. Usov commanded boder guards to took their places in the trenches. There were about 30 soldiers and junior officers. The lieutenant divided them into 3 groups. He led the defense himself in the first trench. Border guards were defending the Belarusian border for more than 6 hours. But the quantity of officers was decreasing rapidly as the quantity of ammunition. Soon enemy tanks appeared. They began to surround the frontier post on the flanks, and it was doomed. Then Lieutenant Usov took a sniper rifle and opened fire on the advancing Germans.

On that day the staff of frontier post directed by Viktor Usov performed an unprecedented military feat. The border guards repelled three long artillery bombardments and seven attacks of enemy that several times outnumbered them.

The body of the dead hero was found only 10 years later after the war. The dead hero was still lying in the trench with a rifle in his hands. In 1965 Lieutenant Viktor Usov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

The name of the brave commander Viktor Usov was included into the list of staff, and every day when they read out the order of combat staff appointment for border protection at first they read the name of the brave soldier.

The monument to border guards was erected on the territory of the frontier post № 1 named after Hero of the Soviet Union V.M.Usov. It is a soldier on a special pedestal. There is a museum in the frontier post. All exhibits are authentic. They were found on the place of the June battle. Even today you can find rusty bullets in the village Usovo - evidences of fierce fighting that took place here in the summer of 1941.
