History
The origins of Mazyr go far back into the past. The city emerged on a hill known as Zamkavaya Gora (Castle Hill), where in the 11th–12th centuries a fortified center of the ancient settlement, known as a «detinets», was located. Later, a castle was built there, featuring a palace, the Church of the Holy Savior, towers, and a well. The Mazyr Castle witnessed numerous historical events, especially during the 17th century, when military conflicts led to its decline. Since then, the castle has not been rebuilt as a fortification, but Castle Hill remains a significant historical and cultural landmark of the city.
Architecture
A unique feature of the historical center of Mazyr is the preserved 12th-century layout, accentuated by the terrain. Narrow, winding streets follow the contours of ravines, creating the cozy atmosphere of an old town. On this territory are located architectural monuments such as the St. Michael’s Cathedral and the former male gymnasium building, both classified as monuments of the 3rd category of cultural value. Modern buildings are mostly two- and three-story and blend harmoniously into the historical environment.
