History of Construction
The construction of Forts No. 3 and No. 5 was carried out as part of the modernization of the Brest Fortress. Fort No. 5 was built between 1878 and 1888 and was reinforced multiple times, while Fort No. 3 was constructed in 1913. The work was carried out under the supervision of military engineer I.O. Belinsky. These fortifications were designed for circular defense and provided additional protection for the Brest-Litovsk Fortress. On June 22, 1941, heavy fighting took place here as the soldiers of the Red Army heroically fought against the German forces.
Architecture of the Forts
Fort No. 5 is one of the best-preserved. It has a pentagonal shape and was built of brick. A surrounding earthen rampart and a moat filled with water reinforce the structure. Inside, there is a barracks with 11 casemates, connected to the front caponier and underground passages. Here, visitors can also see samples of military equipment, such as anti-aircraft guns and armored vehicles.
Fort No. 3, built in 1913, was used as a storage facility after the war and has been partially preserved. Visiting it allows one to see what defensive structures of that time looked like.
