History of Creation
The history of Hlybokaye Church begins in the first half of the 17th century. In 1628, local nobleman and patron Joseph Korsak founded the first wooden church on this site. However, during the Thirteen Years’ War (1654–1667), Hlybokaye suffered a devastating attack by Russian troops, and the church was burned down. After the war, the town was restored, but the old church building became dilapidated, and in 1764 it was finally dismantled.
In its place, construction of a new stone church in the late Baroque style began. The construction lasted nearly two decades (1764–1782), and eventually, a majestic church with two towers was erected. However, over time, the need for expanding the building arose, and in the early 20th century (1902–1908), based on the design of architect J. Zaro, the church underwent a significant reconstruction. During the renovation, it received a transept, side naves, and a sacristy, transforming from a single-nave basilica into a spacious three-nave church with a cross vault. The towers were raised by two additional tiers, making them four-tiered, while their decorative design retained the characteristic features of “Vilnius Baroque.”
Architecture and Spiritual Life
The Holy Trinity Church is an example of refined late Baroque with elements of the “Vilnius” style, characteristic of church architecture in Belarus at the end of the 18th century. Its main facade is rich in decorative elements: arched openings, pilasters, a volute-shaped pediment, and the sculpture “Crucifixion” placed in an arched niche. The rich plastic decor gives the building a solemn and majestic appearance.
In addition to the main altar, the church houses two side altars with unique 18th-century icons, including “Mother of God of Tenderness,” “Joseph with a Child,” and “The Holy Family.” The carved wooden choir loft, featuring an organ in the Neo-Gothic style, is also an impressive sight.
Beneath the church lies a spacious crypt, stretching across the entire width of the building. Here, according to his will, the church’s founder was buried, wishing for a simple burial without grand ceremonies. At one time, a portrait of him was placed on one of the church’s columns, but it has not survived.
The church remains active today, serving as a place of pilgrimage and spiritual life for local Catholics. Regular services are held here, as well as concerts of organ and sacred music, attracting visitors from all over Belarus.
