There were general diets of the Rech Pospolitaya. In this building the last time the Sejm of Poland in 1793 signed an agreement on the division of Poland by Russia and Prussia, and in 1795 the King and Grand Duke of Lithuania Stanisław August Poniatowski, signed the act of renunciation. King lived there until 1797. In one part of the palace were the royal apartments, in the other - a space intended for the meetings of the Sejm.
After the 1750 built a chapel, a covered dome, partly preserved as an entrance gate. During the Russian partition of Poland staged a palace hospital and barracks. In 1941 the building was destroyed by war deystviy. Castle was rebuilt in 1952 and renovated by architect Vladimir Varaksin in classic style.
The original form is preserved only in the entrance gates and statues of sphinxes. From 1950 to 1990 are housed Grodno Oblast Committee of the PBC, and since 1990 is of historical and archaeological museum and a regional library named Kar.
