Geodetic point «Leskovichi»
Description
Struve Arc – the network from 265 triangulable points crossing from the North to the south 10 European states: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova which was created from 1816 to 1855 for the purpose of determination of parameters of Earth, its form and the size. Measurements were taken under the leadership of the famous Russian astronomer, the academician, the first director of Pulkovo Observatory Struve Vasily Yakovlevich
Thanks to these objects the fact that Earth has the form not of an ideal sphere, but an ellipsoid was proved. Scientists claim that, despite temporary changes of a land relief, the difference between modern and ancient measurements of a meridian constituted less than 3,5 cm.
«Struve Arc» is included in the List of the world heritage of UNESCO. From 265 points only 34 have remained. In the territory of Belarus there are 19 geodetic points - it is more, than in any other country, 6 of them are entered in the list of the World heritage. On all points metal tetrahedral pyramids, and additional memorial steles (the obelisk 1,5 m high topped with a 100-kilogram «terrestrial» sphere with a contour of Belarus) are established it is possible to see in points of a geodetic arch of «Chekutsk», «Leskovichi», «Osovnitsa».
