Description

Polotsk - the oldest city of Belarus, along with Kiev and Novgorod one of the most ancient Slavic citys. The first annalistic mention of Polotsk refers to the year 862. Center of the Principality of Polotsk, the first princedom in Belarus and one of the most ancient princedoms of East Slavs. Belarusian statehood and culture in Polotsk was born. Rogneda, Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Francis Skorina, Simeon of Polotsk were born there.

Polotsk - was built on one of the routes of the great trade route "from the Vikings to the Greeks", at the confluence of river Polota in the Western Dvina. To our days Historical Center of Polotsk survived, the birthplace of the ancient city. Ancient settlement occupied an area of ​​about 8 hectares and represent a set of archaeological, architectural, landscape monuments included in the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve. It also includes area of Savior-Euphrosyne monastery .
