History of the Lyakhovets Church of the Nativity of the Virgin
The first mention of Lyakhovtsy dates back to 1546. By 1575, a church had already been built here, becoming a spiritual center for local residents. Around 1650, a "Malorita master," a representative of the Western Polesian icon painting school, created an icon of the Nativity of the Virgin for the church. This image became one of the earliest known depictions of the Mother of God in Belarus and is now preserved in the Chapel of St. Nicholas. The current church building was erected in 1713. In the 19th century, the church underwent reconstruction, with a wooden bell tower added that harmoniously blended into the overall ensemble. During the Soviet period, on September 12, 1964, the church was closed, but decades later, in 1988, the revival of church life began.
Architecture and Spiritual Life of the Lyakhovets Church of the Nativity of the Virgin
The Lyakhovets Church is a classic example of Western Polesian wooden architecture. It has a three-part, longitudinal-axial composition, consisting of the main volume, the apse, and the narthex with a trapezoidal vestibule. The exterior of the church is almost devoid of decorative elements, but a Baroque two-tiered dome crowning the central volume attracts attention. White window trims with triangular pediments add elegance to the structure. In 1988, the church resumed worship services and once again became an important spiritual center of the region. Today, the church is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus.
