History
Until the late 19th century, the center of Brest was predominantly built of wood. However, devastating fires in 1895 and 1901 destroyed much of the area, leading to large-scale reconstruction. The city was rebuilt in stone, though with restrictions on building height — due to the proximity of the Brest Fortress, structures taller than 3–4 stories were not allowed. Although many buildings were lost during World War II and subsequent urban redevelopment, numerous architectural monuments have survived and still define the historical panorama of the city.
