History of Creation
The foundation of the monastery in Hlybokaye is linked to the arrival of the Carmelites—one of the oldest Catholic monastic orders, whose roots trace back to the Prophet Elijah and Mount Carmel in Palestine. In 1639, the "Discalced" Carmelites began the construction of the church and monastery, completing it by 1654.
In 1735, the complex was significantly rebuilt in the Vilnius Baroque style. During this period, the church acquired its majestic appearance, characteristic of this architectural style. The monastery was not only a place of worship but also served an educational function—housing a school, a noble boarding house, a library of 3,000 books, a physics cabinet, a pharmacy, and a hospital.
In the 19th century, the monastery was closed by Russian authorities following the suppression of the 1863 uprising, in which the Carmelites actively participated. Their monastery became a place of imprisonment for the insurgents. In 1875, the church was re-consecrated as an Orthodox temple, and its interior underwent significant changes: frescoes were lost, but an iconostasis was installed.
Architecture and Spiritual Life
The Hlybokaye Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos is a striking example of Vilnius Baroque. It is a three-nave basilica with a rectangular apse, with finely designed towers attached to the massive main volume, giving the building an impression of lightness and upward aspiration.
In front of the main facade of the church stands a three-tiered gate, constructed during the 1735 reconstruction. The interior has preserved cylindrical vaults with geometric stucco ornamentation. The main shrine is a copy of the miraculous icon of the Theotokos "It Is Truly Meet," brought in 1911 from Kareia—the capital of Mount Athos.
Legends surround the church regarding underground passages that allegedly connected it with the Trinity Church and even the monastery in Biarezviečča. There are also stories about how the 1863 insurgents hid in these underground tunnels.
Today, the church operates as an Orthodox place of worship, with regular services, baptisms, and weddings. It is an important pilgrimage site, attracting believers from across Belarus.
